Happy Losers, Miserable Winners, and the OES Bridge to Organizational Success

At Performance Dashboard, we assess, detect, and report on the level of healthy Relational Behaviors (people soft skills), effective Operational Practices (business hard skills), and resilience of the Immune System within organizations. We help leaders avoid activity traps and blind spots where people can feel good about being ineffective and losing the game, or they are winning the game but burned out and moving out. This happens in too many planning, team-building retreats, and executive coaching sessions.

By administering the Organizational Effectiveness Survey (OES) to all employees, leadership and support teams identify their preferred behaviors and practices, the resilience of their Immune System, and target areas for growth improvement.

To help us better understand the foundation upon which the OES was developed, let’s look at how people and organizations think and behave.

For people, our brains reinforce different ways of gathering information and making decisions. For example, the left brain is more systematic, logical, analytical, and objective. The right brain is more intuitive, creative, emotional, and subjective.

For organizations, their “brains” – or what some call culture – also reinforce different ways in which they gather information, make decisions, behave, and work in certain cultures.

We all have worked for one or both of the following organization cultures.

Some organizations prefer using and developing the right brain for people-focused activity over the left brain for systems and business-focused activity. In these organizations, people can feel good about being ineffective. They can be losing the game but feeling good about it.

Other organizations prefer developing the left brain for effective business practice activities over the right brain for people-focused activity. These organizations can feel horrible and even sick about being effective. They may be winning the game but killing off good people. You can go into one of these organizations and feel a lack of energy. We call it the “Land of The Walking Dead”.

At Performance Dashboard, we help leaders bridge the gap between happy losers and miserable winners…. to be healthy, effective, resilient, and sailing for success.
